Baseload Power Japan Participates in the 20th World Winter Cities Conference for Mayors

The World Winter Cities Association for Mayors (WWCAM) is a network that brings together winter cities of the world to meet and learn from each other about winter technologies and experiences under the slogan “Winter is a Resource and an Asset.” The three-day conference gathered city governments and representatives from Japan, Finland, South Korea, China, etc. to exchange ideas on tourism, urban development, and sustainability.
As a Swedish geothermal developer, Mr. Yokoyama was invited to present during the Energy-related Session, which was facilitated by Associate Professor Juha Saunavaara from Hokkaido University’s Arctic Research Center. Professor Taro Mori from Hokkaido University’s Faculty of Engineering also shared his insights during the session.
In his presentation, Mr. Yokoyama highlighted:
- An overview of the Baseload Group.
- Key insights into Japan’s geothermal market potential.
- Baseload Power Japan’s approach to utilizing homegrown geothermal energy to drive rural revitalization, enhance local resilience, and support Japan’s green transition.
Quoting the Hokkaido Shimbun (北海道新聞), Mr. Yokoyama stated:
“To build geothermal power plants, we may face strong opposition from local residents, including hot spring owners. In addition to sharing scientific facts regarding safety, we need to participate in local communities to raise their awareness and communicate the potential benefits for job creation and community well-being”
Hokkaido, recognized as one of Japan’s highest region for geothermal potential, is at the forefront of renewable energy initiatives. During the conference, the City of Sapporo unveiled its “Sapporo Declaration” (札幌宣言) alongside a series of forward-looking policy initiatives. The city is working to establish itself as a Green Powerhouse and Green Financial Hub by promoting renewable energy, data centers, and next-generation semiconductor innovation. These bold strategies aim to attract visionary investors and companies, fostering impactful collaboration and sustainable development.
Baseload Power Japan extends its sincere gratitude to Associate Professor Juha Saunavaara and the City of Sapporo for the invitation and opportunity to contribute to the discussion. We look forward to continuing our collaboration to unlock Hokkaido’s geothermal potential and create sustainable solutions for future generations.
