Baseload Capital’s aim is to become a leading global investor, developer and operator of geothermal energy. Since we will not achieve this on our own, we work for a planet in balance by leading partnerships to scale up the entire industry.

The global potential of geothermal energy is roughly 200 GWe (electricity) and 5000+ GWth (thermal = heating and cooling) with today’s conventional technology. This is our addressable market, constantly growing with innovative technologies and approaches.

Our goal is to help start geothermal power plants around the world, wherever there is the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and at the same time generate a healthy financial return on our investments. To each new business in our portfolio, we bring equity, financial structuring and knowledge.

How we differ

We push the boundaries of geothermal development.

By addressing underutilized and overlooked resources, we explore lower temperatures, where more data is accessible, to expand the market. But that never means that we will say no to high temperatures – in fact, quite the opposite.

We de-risk investments with a global portfolio.

Building a portfolio instead of working with one-off projects creates economies of scale. By spreading the risk, we also lower it. The global portfolio approach increases our efficiency since we can accelerate the rate of innovation as lessons learned are shared across all our markets. To secure long-term profitability and success, we match each phase in each geothermal project with the right kind of financial instruments.

We collaborate to scale the entire industry.

Our partner approach stands out. We aim to grow the whole geothermal industry, not just our own share of it. By creating a global geothermal platform of partners throughout the supply chain, where all involved can share lessons learned, we scale up the industry faster together.

Together with owners like Baker Hughes and Chevron New Energies, Baseload Capital is accelerating geothermal development by incorporating over 100 years of knowledge, technology and experience from the oil and gas industry.

As one of the first European investments by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, founded by Bill Gates, Baseload Capital also carries a certain quality mark, as Breakthrough Energy only invests in companies that can reduce emissions by at least half a gigaton of greenhouse gases.

Our main shareholder is the family office of Gullspång, with a long-term investment horizon and a portfolio of companies involved in energy, food and water. Other owners are the investment companies Blue and LMK Forward.
